What Kind of Detergent Should You Use with Egyptian Cotton?

In order to increase the longevity of your Egyptian cotton sheets, it’s important to use the right products for delicate care. Certain chemically infused care products can cause harm to your linens, thus resulting in damaged, discolored, or deteriorated sheets. This can also cause irritation and discomfort during sleep. 

Opt for Mild Detergent

We always recommend using a mild detergent that does not have harsh chemicals infused in the mix. Strong stain-removing chemicals, whiteners, brighteners, softeners, and bleach can weaken the fine Egyptian cotton fibers and cause color loss over time. Fill the washing machine with cold water and add ½ of the recommended amount of detergent. If the linens are particularly soiled, use warm water with the recommended amount before submerging the linens. Do not pour detergent on top of the linens.

Avoidents 

There are some types of detergents that are made with different substances and come in various forms that can actually be more harmful to your sheets, especially when you want to take extra caution in protecting your high end luxury linens. It’s best to avoid these common laundry products if you want to increase longevity in your sheets:

Powdered Detergent

Powdered detergents can leave a residue on your sheets due to the powdery nature of the detergent. This can also make it harder to dissolve into the water which can actually lessen the even distribution of the detergent in the wash and lead to an unevenly washed load.

Harsh Liquid Detergent

If your detergent is too harsh or composed of a large variety of chemicals, it can weaken the Egyptian cotton fibers which can damage the sheets and cause them to pill and fray. Color loss is also a common result of using detergents that are too harsh. 

Softener

Softeners can also cause unwanted residue on your sheets as well as actually stiffen certain fabrics. Because Egyptian cotton is not made with synthetic materials, but only high quality, long-staple fibers, it is less likely to stiffen like other materials such as microfiber and bamboo, however because of the consistency, it is more likely to damage fabric than mild products.
