Sateen vs. Satin vs. Silk

Sometimes we confuse these common fabrics, however it’s important to understand the major differences between sateen, satin and silk when it comes to your bedding. When investing in your sheets, consider what benefits each material provides and what separates them so you know exactly what you’re getting.

What is Sateen?

Unlike satin and silk, sateen is actually not a material but rather a weave pattern. Used with cotton fabrics, sateen refers to a three-over, one-under weave pattern that results in the soft, silky handfeel. If you prefer a warmer, denser, softer fabric, consider choosing Egyptian cotton sateen for the most luxurious 5-star hotel quality look and feel. Known for its breathability, sateen is pretty common when it comes to cotton bedding and when paired with high quality Egyptian cotton fibers, can last for years to come.

What is Satin?

Satin refers to a specific material that is typically made from nylon, polyester or silk. Commonly used amongst bedding, and some kinds of lingerie, satin has a silky feel on one side and a more matte feel on the other for a unique, expensive look. Unlike cotton sateen, satin traps heat a bit more which can be uncomfortable for hot sleepers. Additionally, due to the delicate nature of the fabric, it can be more susceptible to breakage and may not last as long.

What is Silk?

Produced by silkworms, silk is a soft, silky natural material commonly used in bedding or high-end garments. Because of the unique silky look and feel, silk is considered a luxurious fabric that can be combined with other materials such as cotton making for the perfect balance of soft, silky, smooth and breathable.
