Some of the most common materials used in bedding and apparel, linen and cotton have entirely different manufacturing processes and result in two very different fabrics. The best fabric for you will depend on your preferred handfeel. Take a look at what differentiates cotton and linen to find your perfect bedding set.
Material Source
Linen is derived from the flax plant resulting in a durable, light fabric commonly used in bedding as well as some clothing items. Also derived from a plant, cotton comes from the fibers surrounding a cotton plant and depending on the location and quality of the cotton plant, the cotton fabric feel, durability, and texture will change. One of the rarest and most luxurious materials, Egyptian cotton creates a sumptuously soft, silky and extremely durable fabric for a 5-star hotel quality look and feel.

Texture & Feel
Known to be light and airy, linen can also be seen as somewhat rough initially, however after a few washes and uses, it becomes a crisp, breathable fabric. Most people prefer linen during the warmer months because of the cool fabric. Cotton is softer and smoother than linen but that does not necessarily mean it can’t be cooling. Cotton is great for year-round use due to the temperature regulating qualities that allows for constant breathability and comfort. Look for cotton percale for the hotter nights and consider cotton sateen if you sleep cooler and prefer something a bit warmer.

Durability
Both cotton and linen are known to be pretty durable due to the fibers from the plant they are made up with. Specifically, Egyptian cotton contains extra-long staple fibers for an extremely durable fabric that will last wash after wash and continue to get softer, rather than deteriorate like some lower quality cotton.

Care & Maintenance
One of the downfalls of linen is that it can wrinkle fairly easily. This can make it difficult to maintain, especially right out of the dryer. However, removing it just before fully dry and laying it out on the bed so it dries flat can help. Alternatively, cotton washes really well without the need for too many extra steps. A more forgiving fabric, cotton can be washed in warm or cold water for a deep cleanse routinely every week.
