How to Reduce Towel Shedding

Not uncommon, your bath towels and other bath linens can shed which could lead to unwanted excess fabric on your skin, floor, and counters. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can go about reducing the amount of shedding your towel produces for a more comfortable and stress-free spa experience. 

Why Does Shedding Occur?

Towel shedding can happen from constant use as the towels endure many wash cycles, rubbing, squeezing, and other towel uses. Additionally, the manufacturing process of the towels can lead to an excess of fabric that sheds towards the beginning of usage. 

How to Reduce Shedding

Take a look at some of the ways you can eliminate this unwanted nuisance.

Wash in Cold Water & Hang Dry

Wash your towels first in cold water and hang them to dry to help remove the shedding layer that the towel contains when it’s brand new. High heat can actually set in the extra fabric that coats the towels, so avoiding the dryer altogether will help reduce the intensity and amount of shedding.

Use a Lint Roller

If you notice unwanted shedding, use a lint roller to wipe away any fabric that is not attached to the towels this way there is less to fall off. Take the roller and go over the entire towel on both sides for a good brush. You can follow this up with a cold wash to completely clear away any excess fibers.

Wash with Vinegar or Baking Soda

A popular method for eliminating excess shedding is adding a little bit, about a cup, or white vinegar or baking soda to the water when washing your towels. Avoid harsh detergents, softeners, or dryer sheets as all of these can abrade the fabric and actually cause more shedding and damage.
