Can Sheets & Towels Be Washed Together?
When it comes to the weekly wash cycle, it’s nice to condense loads by combining various types of linens for more convenience. However, sometimes it can be damaging to combine certain items so take some time to consider the pieces you intend to wash and be sure it is safe and beneficial.
Different Fabric Requirements
Depending on the fabric types associated with your sheets and towels, it can determine whether or not they should be washed together. Harsher, rougher towels may not pose well with soft, delicate sheets. Additionally, towels are usually thicker and can shed some lint which can cling to the sheets and be difficult to remove.
Drying Time
Because towels are denser, they normally take longer to dry than sheets that are a bit thinner and lighter. This can lead to uneven drying since the towel dry time will inevitably lead the sheets to overdry and possibly cause shrinkage.
Hygiene Concerns
Used to dry your body, towels can accumulate more bacteria and moisture build-up which can mix with the bedding if washed together. Even though the wash cycle is made to provide a deep clean, it may be safer to keep the towels and sheets separate this way there is no risk of bacteria transfer.
Best Practices for Washing Sheets & Towels
Regardless of the type of bed and bath linens you intend to wash, it’s a good idea to keep some general tips in consideration for every wash cycle.
Sort by Color & Fabric
Keep your colors and whites separately and consider the type of material before throwing all your linens in the washer. This will help to prevent any dye transfer, pilling or fraying and other unwanted abrasion and damage.
Use Appropriate Settings
Avoid using hot water as this can cause shrinkage and hurt the fibers of the sheets, towels, blankets, or any other linens. Opt for cold or warm water to be safe and always use a gentle cycle if you are unsure how to properly wash an item.
Use the Right Detergent
Choose mild detergents over harsh, liquid, powdered, and other chemically based detergents. These intense detergents can destroy the fibers and overtime will lead to damage, discoloration and overall decrease longevity.
